"Mary Poppins" Set Comes to Life
May 12, 2015
Anyone familiar with the movie version of “Mary Poppins” knows it is filled with dazzling color, wonderfully wild characters, and brilliant effects, but the Banks’ household remains at the center of the story. With these expectations in mind, Barter’s resident scenic designer Derek Smith has decided to build the entire Banks house on stage for the blockbuster musical, opening May 23.
Calling it “one of the most challenging and exciting sets I’ve ever worked on,” Derek’s experience includes 12 seasons at Barter and, with this show, 50 original set designs. For “Mary Poppins,” he studied Edwardian and Victorian pop-up dollhouse books, and illustrations in the original P.L. Travers books. His ambitious design complements the enchantment and whimsy of “Mary Poppins,” bringing to life the childlike wonder in each theatregoer.
Watch Derek’s set design evolve through the early phases of set construction as Barter’s world-class production team goes to work.
