Resident Lighting Designer / Master Electrician

Reports To: Director of Production

Summary of the Job:

The Resident Lighting Designer is responsible for 8-10 designs per year. As the Master Electrician the position is responsible for the staff, equipment, and everyday operation of the Barter Electric Department, as well as helping to coordinate any special events at the Theatres.

Essential Functions:

Lighting Design for Gilliam Stage productions
Attend production meetings and rehearsals
Generate show plot and paperwork, preferably in Vectorworks and Lightwright
Coordinate show needs with other departments
Ensure cues are programmed prior to the beginning of technical rehearsals
Attend technical rehearsals and preview performances

Manage Electrics staff: Assistant Master Electrician, Stage II Electrician, and interns
Schedule and direct crew calls
Train all staff members to be proficient in their duties
Maintain clear lines of communication both inter and intradepartmental
Train spotlight operators for all shows
Operation of Electrics Department
Manage departmental budget
Ordering of replacement and new installation materials (i.e. gel, tape, lamps)
Oversee activities during rep and coordination with other departments
Organized and timely paperwork (i.e. time sheets, budget material, show paperwork, and script distribution)
Proper and timely staffing and planning of work calls keeping safety in mind
Purchasing, repairing and maintaining all theatrical and architectural electrical systems and equipment
Oversee all seasonal changeovers
Find and manage over hire crew when necessary
Manage any required special effects (i.e. pyro, fog, etc.)
Work with other Lighting Designers to plan, implement, and maintain all designs
Plan circuiting, order and prepare expendables, hang, focus, wire practicals and special effects, prepare console show files, work notes, maintain production through the run
To maintain the specific look of all lighting for Barter's buildings (i.e. architectural, signage, and emergency lighting both inside and outside)

Special Events Coordination
Communicate and coordinate with the promoter and/or act, and other Barter Departments
Help plan and execute the technical elements of the event

Required Education/Experience:
Minimum: BFA in TechnicalTheatre with an emphasis in Lighting Design, at least 5 years professional experience as Master Electrician and Lighting Designer

Necessary Skills:

Advanced Experience with ETC Lighting Systems (Ion, Element, Express Consoles, Smartpack and Unison/Sensor Dimming), Experience with Intelligent Lighting, DMX and MIDI data flows, pyrotechnics. Advanced Knowledge of Vectorworks Spotlight 2017 and Lightwright 6. Working knowledge of sound system signal flow and operations helpful.

Musical Director

Summary of the Job:

In conjunction with other Musical Director will be responsible for a variety of duties within the music department including but not limited to teaching singing parts to casts, accompaniment, hiring musicians, acting as rehearsal pianist, creating and/or editing music tracks and budget preparation.

Essential Functions:

Teach and rehearse all vocal (singing) parts to casts
Provide accompaniment at rehearsals
Conduct and accompany performances
Keep an ongoing library and file of musicians available for hire
Interview, hire, and rehearse musicians for pit orchestra
Maintain the quality of musicianship during the musicals and call musical brush up rehearsals as needed
Provide accompaniment at Barter auditions
Attend production meetings
Be a musical resource for the company
Secure a composer if original music is desired for a production
Prepare and keep track of the annual budget for the music department

Required Education/Experience:

BFA /BM in Music or Musical Theatre or related experience.

Necessary Skills:

Excellent piano/keyboard and conducting skills
Proficient in orchestrations and notation software (Finale, Sibelius, etc.)
Proficient in Logic Pro X and Q-Lab

Costume Crafts Master

Barter Theatre is seeking a Costume Crafts Master, responsible for the production of all costume crafts for each show according to the Costume Designer’s artistic vision.

Essential Duties:

Creation and completion of assigned crafts including but not limited to:

fabric modification — dye, paint, coat
millinery and headwear
footwear — maintenance, alteration, rubbering
jewelry
masks
accessories
specialty costume pieces – armor, gunbelts, swordbelts

Proper fitting of all craft related costume pieces
Collaboration with the Draper as needed
Collaboration with the Wig and Make-up artisan as needed
Completion of craft notes from costume fittings
Completion of craft notes from rehearsal reports
Completion of craft notes from technical rehearsals
Completion of craft notes and repairs from performance reports if wardrobe is unable to do the work
Updating the Costume Bible with information regarding maintenance of craft related costume pieces
Source craft supplies and report to the Shop Manager for purchase
Other duties as assigned

Required Education/Experience:

A BA, BFA, or MFA in costume technology and a minimum of two years professional experience. OR five years professional experience.

Necessary Skills:

Knowledge of patterning and draping
Basic sewing skills – hand and machine, particularly millinery
Textile modification and use of various methods of fabric dyeing and painting
Millinery and headwear construction and modification
Jewelry making and repair
Mask making
Leather work: tooling, shaping, stitching, dyeing, etc.
Foam – carving and sculpting
Use of related materials and equipment for each task
Use of home and industrial sewing machines
Use of basic hand-held power tools
Basic computer skills
Creative problem solving
The ability to work within a team
Proven leadership skills
Excellent communication and diplomacy
The ability to lift at least 40 lbs.

Barter Youth Academy Instructor

Barter Youth Academy (BYA) in Abingdon, Virginia is seeking energetic, passionate, and skilled instructors for our growing programs in Abingdon VA., Bristol, TN., Johnson City, TN. Kingsport, TN., and Marion, VA.! Successful candidates will have at least two (2) years of teaching experience with one or more of the following class levels: Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle School, or High School, with a fluent working knowledge of theater (stage-direction experience as a plus).

The position will involve teaching students in Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle or High School fundamental and intermediate acting/stage skills. The position will involve 1 to 3 hours of class-time per week (during an 8 week workshop period), and also putting together a final “demonstration” performance at the end of the course which will include minimal light, sound, costume, props, and set design. Some community outreach is included with job duties.

Successful candidates must be self-reliant, motivated, adaptable, and willing to receive and implement input from the Artistic Director and Associate Director of BYA. Strong class-management skills are imperative as well. Reliable transportation and willingness to commute are a must.

This position is paid by a flat-fee per class taught.

Production Intern

Barter Theatre (founded 1933) – a LORT / AEA resident repertory company producing shows almost year-round, located in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia, is seeking a full-time production intern with an emphasis in props. Duties will include (but not be limited to) working as part of the backstage deck crew, show changeover, and filling in other areas as needed. This position will work primarily in the SM and Props departments. Candidates must be energetic, possess willingness to learn and work well within a team. Responsibilities will include working during changeovers and running shows. This is a full time position involving six days of work per week and includes work at night, on weekends, and occasionally on holidays. Relevant experience and/or degree is desired for all positions.

Contract dates are: February 18 to mid-August 2017. Position has the potential for extension.
