Barter Theatre Invites You to a One Night Only Event
"The Executioner’s Sons"
A staged reading and community forum
Directed by Megan Hamilton
Join us April 15th at 7:30pm at Barter’s Stage II for an evening of theatre and community conversation. Written by Barter Theatre’s Playwright in Residence Catherine Bush, The Executioner’s Sons is a reimagining of the events surrounding those that take place during Shakespeare’s Richard III. Following the staged reading will be a community forum that will investigate the themes of the play such as capital punishment, abuse of power, and leadership. A panel made up of different community organizations will help lead the discussion. No reservations are required, although we do recommend arriving early. This is a complimentary event with a first come first serve seating arrangement. Donations are welcomed and will go directly to Barter’s educational and outreach programs.
Synopsis of The Executioner’s Sons:
Henry has it all: a devoted wife, two sons who worship him, and a profession in the family business—as executioner in the Tower of London. However, turmoil strikes after the death of King Edward IV. As cries of treason fill the air, Edward’s two young sons are brought to the Tower for safekeeping until the elder son’s coronation. Henry’s sons quickly befriend the two young princes as Henry himself forms a friendship with their guardian, Lord Hastings. But these are dangerous times, and there are men who would claim the Throne of England for themselves. Henry finds himself forced to choose between love and loyalty, friendship and duty...choices that will alter his life – and history – forever.
