Barter Theatre has two unique venues on Main Street in charming downtown Abingdon, VA. Barter's Main Stage has a grand and rich history dating back to 1831. Directly across the street you'll find Barter Stage II and our dining experience Bob's at Barter.

Abingdon is one of Virginia's most historic towns, with tree-lined streets, charming nineteenth century homes, and brick sidewalks offering a welcome respite for visitors.

Southwest Virginia is an easy drive from metropolitan areas including Charlotte, Knoxville, Roanoke, and the Tri-Cities area. For driving directions, click here.

Parking

Parking is available in the Barter Theatre lot on Main Street, across from the main stage and adjacent to Barter Stage II (entrance is off of Partington Place, just past The Martha Washington Inn and Spa.

Street parking is also available in marked spaces on Main Street and in unmarked spaces on Valley Street, which runs parallel to Main Street and immediately behind Barter’s main stage.

Motorcoach parking

Unload passengers on the right side of Main Street for Barter Theatre, across from the theatre (just after the Martha Washington Inn's drive and before Partington Place); crosswalks are right there for passengers to cross street.

To park motorcoach or vehicle: immediately turn right onto Partington Place and left into Barter's parking lot adjacent to Barter Stage II and The Barter Café. Motorcoach parking is towards the back of the parking lot.

Handicapped accessible parking

Handicapped accessible parking is available in front of both theatres on Main Street and in our parking lot. Look for the marked spaces.

Bob's at Barter

 

Enjoy a completely remodeled dining space at Barter Stage II! Bob's at Barter features new flooring, paint and light fixtures, as well as intimate seating arrangements for comfortable conversations and a more sophisticated decor.  Bob’s at Barter is a cozy spot with a great ambiance. It’s the perfect place to warm up with a cup of coffee, sit down for a light meal, or linger and chat before and after seeing a Barter production.

Bob's offers free Wi-Fi Access, and is open everyday including open late after evening performances. Bob's is located on Barter Square adjacent to Barter Stage II.

Our NEW Menu

We're now featuring new items like a grilled cheese caprese sandwich; spinach salad with strawberries, candied pecans and blue cheese; stuffed mushroom Florentine; a black bean burger and roasted tomato bruschetta. We’ve kept some long-time customer favorites too, like the Porterfield Club sandwich and grilled cheese and PB&J for the kids.

Tours & Talkbacks

Group Tours

Bring your group to see a show at Barter Theatre, and add on tour of Barter for a minimal fee!  This behind-the-scenes tour is appropriate for groups of any age, from elementary school to adults. We offer two different tours, so pick the tour that most interests your group.

 

Learn the history of the second oldest regional theatre in the country and see what goes on behind the curtains with a History/Backstage Tour of Barter Theatre.

Or, see how a show is created by touring Barter Theatre’s rehearsal halls, costume shop and prop shop with our Production Tour.

All of the Tours are conducted by a Barter Theatre staff member and are approximately one hour long. Please note that both tours require walking and going up & down stairs. Handicap accessible tours are available.
