Director's Notes

For me, this play is like going back in time. It is a reminder of what the world looked like when I was seven years old.

Everything was important. Every day seemed like a new day with new possibilities. Every Christmas was a huge event with all sorts of magic and intrigue and possibility: Santa Claus, the reindeer, the presents, the Christmas trees, the celebrations, the parties, the EXTRAVAGANZA of it all.

We were out of school for a few days so we could prepare for the big day. And then we needed a few days to recover from all of the festivities before we went back to school again.

And then there was the coming of the New Year shortly after Christmas. A New Year! Holy cow. A whole new year. I remember now... when I was seven years old I had only experienced a few new years up to that time in my life so the thought of a new year brought with it the possibility of a new world, a new life, new thoughts and new discoveries and new people and it was all just SO MUCH.

But there was also a bit of sadness. The good kind of sadness you feel when you are saying goodbye to something that you loved. When I think about it now I realize that I was saying goodbye to the person that I had been. I was growing up and it meant stepping into a new life, but it also meant leaving the younger version of myself behind. I was getting my new teeth. I was losing the first set of teeth that I had ever had and I was growing the teeth that I would have for the rest of my life. I was a little bit sad to leave my younger self behind but I was even more excited to be growing into the person that I would become.
