Director's Notes

An Interview with Director Nicholas Piper:

 A)  Why do you think this show has been so successful?
--It can be enjoyed on so many levels.  On just a simple curiosity level—who were the Carters and how did they contribute to country music?  On a concert level--many people know the songs in this show, but had no idea that they were originally Carter family songs.  Finally, it taps into something universal, but not easily identifiable.   It reminds us of family, of growing up, of the simplicity of the music against the complexity of the relationships.

    B)  Why are you excited to direct this show?
--I’ve been involved in this show since it’s inception; I’ve participated in the changes and seen its growth.  After having toured it from New Jersey to Texas and everywhere in between, this show just works.  It touches people of all backgrounds.   I’m especially excited to work with Eugene Wolf (who plays A. P. and serves as the music director) in what I think is his signature role.  I love to be part of telling a story about our heritage and about the music that I love so much.

C)  Why should people see this show, even if they’ve seen it before?
--We’ve had more repeat audience members for this show than just about any other show I’ve been involved in.   This show fills your heart on each viewing.  And it’s theatre!  It’s live!  Every performance is different!
