More of the Story...
I first read Clyde Edgerton's Walking Across Egypt over 20 years ago when it was first published. I had just read his Raney and was already a huge fan of his voice. Walking Across Egypt just confirmed my fandom. I think I was so taken with it because of the conviction of Mattie Rigsby's beliefs. Mattie lives by the Bible, she serves her Lord and her Lord serves her.more >

AFPP Mini-Production: Walking Across Egypt
Adapted by Catherine Bush from Clyde Edgerton's novel
A Wise and Witty, Down-Home Story Barter’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights mini-production This story proves that with a little direction, a little prayer and a little Southern cooking, you can stand up for what you believe, and stand on your own two feet. When 78 year old Mattie Rigsbee discovers a stray dog on her back porch, she calls the dogcatcher. Little does she know that Lamar Benfield will open her eyes to a world she never knew existed; a world that includes car theft, prison breaks and a juvenile delinquent named Wesley, who is as desperate for family as she is. Armed with only her mouth-watering cornbread and a deep abiding faith in the Almighty, Mattie is determined to woo Wesley to the side of God and good manners. Tickets starting at $21; 17 and under $13. Perfect for your civic or church group! See our special event under More of the Story.
