An Interview with Director Paul Russell:more >
A) Why do you think this show has been so successful?
Its silliness and heart
B) Why are you excited to direct this show?
Bat Boy is about acceptance. But in that message the show doesn't take itself too seriously. BAT BOY is fun with pathos.
Show Reviews
Review of BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL at Barter II by Gary Aday THE WEEKLY WORLD NEWS, a supermarket tabloid, began publication in l979 as a means of utilizing the black-and-white printing machinery of THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER, which had switched to color publication. From the beginning, WWN was a parody of itself, featuring UFO abductions, Elvis sightings, and weird creatures with humanoid characteristics.more > — Gary Aday, Washington County News
ABINGDON, Va. – It could be ripped right out of this morning’s headlines: “Cave explorers in West Virginia’s deepest cavern discover, introduce to media, creature that is part human, part vampire bat.more > — Robert McKinney, Bristol Herald Courier
Bat Boy: The Tabloid Musical
by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, Music by Laurence O'Keefe
This outrageous, shocking rock musical is ripped from the headlines of the Weekly World News that report the discovery of a half-boy half-bat taken in by a town vet. The catchy songs are a mix between Godspell and Rocky Horror Show and cleverly tackle issues of difference and community. This funny, energetic, over-the-top musical follows the story of this bat boy, the family who takes him in, and the town who turns him away. It’s a classic love story with a serious bite. (No bats were harmed in the making of this musical!) STUDENT RUSH TICKETS AVAILABLE: With a valid student ID, tickets are $13, as available 15 minutes prior to any show.
