Thoughts on…Adjoining Trances by Director Evalyn Baron
READING AND WRITING
Adjoining Trances and The Big Read of 2009

“At the age of fourteen I discovered writing as an escape from a world of reality in which I felt acutely uncomfortable. ”  Tennessee Williams, Forward to Sweet Bird of Youth

Put the word “reading” where Williams used the word “writing”, and the above quote speaks for me.
My parents loved to read. Our Atlanta home was packed to the walls with books of every size, shape and subject, and when more bookshelves were needed, Daddy took out his hammer, some nails and scraps of wood, and he built them! No volume was ever thrown away, no book left unread. Come summer, our small clan would rent a cabin at Vogel State Park or a bungalow at Calloway Gardens, and armed with our schools’ summer reading lists and bags full of mouthwatering volumes for the grownups, my parents, brother Richard and I would get sunburned all day and, after dinner, lounge in our own cool worlds, reading all night, or at least for as long as our eyes stayed open!
     I believe in reading.

Adjoining Trances

"Two mythic writers...one truly loving friendship" In the summer of 1946, Tennessee Williams and his newfound friend, Carson McCullers, rented a cottage on Nantucket where he wrote Summer and Smoke and she wrote the play of her already successful novel Member of the Wedding. This sweet and sincere play lovingly realizes that legendary summer as this odd couple of wounded warriors pushes and cajoles each other to create their very best.  Presented as part of The Big Read's celebration of Carson McCullers.
