Thoughts on…Little Shop of Horrorsmore >
Laughing ‘Til It Hurts
(or Laughing Because It Does?)
There has never been laughter without fear or discomfort close by.
The age-old image of the clown with tears in his eyes is familiar to all and I can tell you from experience that my own sense of personal comedy got me through an often uncomfortable, painful adolescence. I discovered early on, that if I could make my popular schoolmates laugh, my social life was bearable!
Therefore, I’ve never understood why people love movies filled with pure violence and pain, nor am I a fan of Horror.

Little Shop of Horrors
Book & Lyrics by Howard Ashman Music by Alan Menken Based upon the film by Roger Corman and screenplay by Charles Griffith
This affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a household name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney's The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin). Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop of Horrors never fails to entertain in this story about a down-and-out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Features the songs "Somewhere That's Green," "Dentist!," "Suddenly, Seymour" and "Suppertime."
